Pitso Mosimane Receives Honorary Doctorate from the University of Johannesburg
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) conferred an honorary doctoral degree on Pitso Mosimane.
The University said the honour recognises Mosimane’s exceptional contributions to the sport and his commitment to excellence and innovation.
“Mosimane’s contributions extend beyond coaching; he is a vocal advocate for African football and has significantly impacted the development of young African players,” read the statement from the university.
In attendance on the stage were honorary doctors Molefi Oliphant (former South African Football Association president), Danny Jordaan (Safa president) and Jomo Sono (South African football great).
Mosimane started his senior career at Jomo Cosmos, then he played for Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, before joining Greek club Ionikos to play under coach Nikos Alefantos. He later joined Belgian team KFC Rita Berlaar and Qatari club Al Sadd.

He earned four caps for Bafana Bafana. Mosimane’s coaching journey began at FC Rita Berlaar in Belgium in 1995, initially as an assistant coach before joining Sundowns’ youth structures.
He later achieved success with SuperSport United, clinching several titles such as the SAA Super 8 Cup and the ABSA Cup. Mosimane coached Bafana Bafana from 2010 to 2012 before returning to Sundowns, where he achieved numerous accolades, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup titles. In 2016, he was named CAF Coach of the Year.
Following a streak of five consecutive league titles with Sundowns, Mosimane departed to join Egyptian powerhouse Al-Ahly, where he continued his successful tenure by capturing the CAF Champions League once again and securing third place in the FIFA Club World Cup consecutively.
