Polokwane Municipality Clarifies Eviction along Matlala Road
Polokwane Municipality has set the record straight regarding the eviction of illegal land invaders along Matlala Road.
Polokwane Executive Mayor, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate loss of life and strongly condemning attempts to link the incidents that transpired to him.
The municipality insists that this was an administrative process unrelated to the political leadership, emphasizing that claims attempting to tarnish the Mayor’s name are misleading.
“This is an administrative process and has nothing to do with the political leadership of the municipality,” said Mayor Mpe.
“Such claims are misleading and intended to tarnish my name. I urge those spreading false narratives to desist from these actions and allow the legal process to unfold.”
The municipality refuted claims suggesting that the municipality had sanctioned these illegal invasions, emphasizing that all actions taken followed legal and regulated procedures.

Mpe further explained that it had engaged extensively with the illegal occupiers of the land.
“The municipality sought and received power of attorney from the landowners to obtain a court order for eviction. This order was granted, and the municipality proceeded with issuing notices and providing the invaders with 48 hours to vacate the land.
“It is important to note that while some portions of the invaded land are registered under the municipality, others belong to private owners. Any unlawful occupation of such land infringes on both municipal and private ownership rights, necessitating legal action,” Mayor Mpe added.
“We acknowledge the increasing demand for land as Polokwane continues to grow. However, illegal occupation will not be tolerated. We are implementing structured measures to ensure that land is made available through proper planning and lawful processes that support sustainable development,” Mpe stated.
The municipality urged residents to follow the proper land application processes to avoid financial loss and legal consequences.
At the same time, Polokwane Municipality expressed condolences for the loss of life during the enforcement of the eviction, with investigations ongoing.
The municipality has deferred to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further details.
