Akani Simbine led South Africa’s 4x100m team to secure their spot at the Paris Olympics, clinching victory in their qualification heat at the World Relays in the Bahamas.
The South African relay quartet comprising Bayanda Walaza, Benjamin Richardson, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani Simbine clinched victory in their 4x100m heat, securing spots for two relay teams at the upcoming Olympics
The 4x100m lineup saw one change from the previous day, with Bradley Nkoana replacing the out-of-form Clarence Munyai on the third leg.
This adjustment proved fruitful as they swiftly circulated the baton around the track in 38.08 seconds, the fourth-fastest time ever recorded by a South African 4x100m team.
Another South Africa’s men’s national relay team, comprising Gardeo Isaacs, Wade van Niekerk, Zakithi Nene, and Lythe Pillay, clinched a silver medal during the inaugural round of the 4x400m event on Sunday.
Not only did this signify their status as the second-fastest overall in the initial heats, posting an impressive time of 2:59:76, but it also secured their team’s berth at the forthcoming Olympic Games by virtue of their qualification for the finals.
With Antonie Nortjie substituting for Wade, the team concluded the World Relays with another silver medal, crossing the finish line in 3:00.75, just narrowly missing out on the gold captured by Botswana, who clocked in at 2:59:11.
This marked a triumphant return for South Africa, as it marked their first medal from the World Relays event since 2019.
